This powerful (200 nanosecond instruction execution) yet easy-to-program (only 35 single word instructions) CMOS flash-based microcontroller is upwards compatible with the PIC16C5X and PIC12FXXX devices. The PIC16F716 features 4 channels of 8-bit Analogue-to-digital (A/D) converter with 2 additional timers and a enhanced capture/compare/PWM function. The Analogue-to-digital Converter (ADC) allows conversion of an analogue input signal to a 8-bit binary representation of that signal. This device uses analogue inputs, which are multiplexed into a single sample and hold circuit. The output of the sample and hold is connected to the input of the converter. The converter generates a 8-bit binary result via successive approximation and stores the conversion result into the ADC result register (ADRES).
